deVere Group — A World Leader In Finance For Expats

Devere Group

deVere Group is an award-winning global financial advice firm offering an international service to expats wherever they are in the world.

Under the watchful eye of CEO and found Nigel Green, deVere Group has grown in stature from humble beginnings to an industry goliath with more than 80,000 clients in 100 countries.

Green had the foresight to mould the company to serve the financial needs of growing numbers of mobile expats who slipped between the cracks of traditional financial advice firms because they regularly moved between financial jurisdictions.

The on-the-move lifestyle prevented many expats putting down financial roots, so deVere Group offered a simple solution to them — put your finances offshore and keep them in one place while moving between countries as and when you like.

The rest, as they say, is history.

deVere Group was founded by Nigel Green in 20220 and now has more than US$10 billion in assets under management as one of the largest and most successful independent and international financial advice firms.

The deVere mantra is to create, grow and safeguard client wealth.

The company does this with input from a team of seasoned financial advice professionals who work tirelessly to offer bespoke financial solutions to expats.

Every client has a dedicated adviser. Dedicated means advisers are responsible for following the deVere mantra personally for each of their clients by drafting a tailored financial plan that suits their current needs and future aspirations.

As Nigel Green often says, deVere works with people not numbers

The deVere mantra: Create, grow and safeguard

The deVere mantra applies if you are setting money aside for retirement, to fund education for your children or fund a major life event, like a wedding.

Advisers treat clients as partners rather than customers by making sense of their goals and dreams, explaining their option in simple terms as a grounding in sound financial advice.

The idea is clients re not force-fed a solution but help to plan their own financial futures by taking ownership of a personal strategy.

This innovation did not happen overnight but has evolved over years of putting clients first and responding to their needs rather than shoehorning them into a direction the company wants to take.

Nigel Green — deVere’s CEO and founder

Nigel Green isn’t only the face of deVere Group but a key figure in international financial services for expats.

His drive and determination have propelled deVere Group into pole position as one of the world’s leading financial companies.

He sits astride deVere Group, a labyrinthine conglomerate of 97 different advisory and fin tech organisations that stretches to every corner of the globe.

Green started his journey in financial services as an adviser in London, following his father into business.

The eureka moment was a trip to the sunshine Caribbean island of Bermuda where he realised expats needed a new kind of financial advice and no one was stepping up to fill the hole.

Shortly after this trip, deVere & Partners was born. As the business quickly expanded, deVere Group followed in 2002, based in Hong Kong.

Now, deVere has 39 offices around the world.

Always bucking the trend to innovate, Green is a fervent believer that fintech is the way forward for financial services and that location, time differences and a mobile lifestyle mean that this is the future for expats who want hands-on management of their money.

This vision has already projected deVere to the forefront of providing clients with 24/7 access to their savings and investments via smartphone apps and the internet.

Nigel Green is more than a figurehead. He’s a leader with a deep passion for his business who really cares about his clients. His DNA is irretrievably entwined with deVere Group and it’s hard to see a future when they are not moving onwards and upwards together.

What does deVere Group do?

deVere Group started and remains a comprehensive provider of independent financial advice for expats.

But the business has grown into much more.

Clients are now supported by an array of smartphone apps giving 24/7 access to client accounts and up-to-the-minute trading data for stocks and shares, funds, commodities and currencies.

Two of the most innovative apps are Crypto and Vault.

deVere Crypto

A secure smartphone wallet for trading and holding cryptocurrencies Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, Dash, Monero, Stellar, Bitcoin Cash and EOS. The app comes with the latest trading and pricing data plus an essential stop-loss button that minimises risk.

deVere Vault

A handy app for expats for transferring and exchanging 22 foreign currencies at competitive rates with no hidden charges. Currencies settled are the British Pound, US Dollar, Euro, Swiss Franc and the Polish Zloty.

Vault also comes with a prepaid credit card for use at any MasterCard outlet or ATM.

Besides cutting edge technology, deVere Group offers clients a suite of traditional tax, estate planning and financial services all aimed at making life easier for expats:

Tax consultancy

Expert advice from professional tax advisers on everything from residency and international tax planning to capital gains tax and domicile status.

Education fees

deVere Group CEO Nigel Green will pay for clients to make a will in a special offer

Mortgages

For expats and other non-residents looking to buy a home in the UK to live in or as an investment. The service searches around 200 lender to find the best deals.

Life insurance

Choose from whole-of-life or term life cover with or without critical illness protection.

DeVere Group clients get to mix and match products and services with the help of their dedicated adviser who takes an integrated approach to putting together a bespoke financial plan for them.

The deVere investment approach

deVere Group advisers put their clients at the centre of everything they do.

That means benchmarking where their financial standing and finding out where they want to be as they pass their life milestones.

The process is ongoing as personal and financial circumstances change throughout the years.

Discussing and drafting a bespoke financial plan is free and gives expats an overview of their wealth and finances.

The financial life plan considers several factors personal to each client, including:

  • Opportunities and risk
  • Investment quality
  • Diversification
  • Tax optimisation
  • Liquidity management

The aim is to collect information about an expat’s finances, savings and investments in one place and to make them easier to manage.

The next step is giving expats a comprehensive picture of the global economy with regular updates on market trends to give investors all the information they need to make informed decisions about their money.

deVere’s investment guru is Tom Elliott who takes the role of international investment strategist.

His market wisdom is disseminated in newsletters, seminars, videos and blogs. As a visiting professor at King’s College, London and after spending 18 years with JP Morgan Asset Management, leaving as an executive director, he has some experience in the field.

deVere takes the core satellite approach to investing. Rather than stake cash against several high-risk investments, a client portfolio is divided into two parts:

The core

This comprises between 60% and 80% of the portfolio allocated to top-quality multi-asset funds that are left to mature with the occasional review and rebalance by a fund manager. The returns are structured to reflect the client’s attitude and expectations to risk.

The satellite

The remaining portfolio is invested in higher risk funds chosen to beat the markets and propel growth.

Risk is controlled by adjusting the core-satellite investment ratio.

Why should expats work with deVere?

Working with one of the world’s leading advice firms like deVere Group can bring several advantages to the table for expats looking to save and invest:

  • Exclusive products and services from big name financial and investment houses
  • Ongoing no-cost financial and estate planning including a free will
  • Smartphone apps giving 24/7 access to expat accounts from wherever they are in the world
  • A comprehensive approach to financial services and investment that scours the market for the best products and services that suit their needs rather than selecting from a narrow range offered by many rival advice firms

deVere will also ensure an expat’s personal investment strategy matches their financial circumstances.

That means giving expats the flexibility of adjusting or even suspending their plans to lessen the shock of life events, like buying a home, raising children, marriage, bereavement or retirement. At these times, an adviser can offer a steady hand to keep financial plans on track.

Every client has different financial objectives, so deVere advisers plan strategies accordingly. 7

Examples of different client goals include:

  • Receiving an income or pension
  • Securing our children’s future with private schooling or sending them through university
  • Ensuring consistent and long-term capital growth
  • Investing for a fixed period
  • Saving a little each month

FATCA help for US expats

FATCA — the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act — has generated all sorts of issues for American expats and especially for Accidental Americans who may never have set foot in the US.

The main problem for US expats is finding banks and other financial institutions who are willing to take on the onerous compliance demanded by the US Internal Revenue Service.

Nigel Green has lobbied against FATCA from the start and has set up a dedicated advice service for Americans who find they are shunned by banks, credit card companies and mortgage lenders the world over.

deVere Group recognises the problems American expats face and has put together several FATCA compliant products and services that can help expats locked out of basic financial services regain their access to credit and banking.
